Up The Junction (1968) - analysing the film in the first scene using mise en scene

Up The Junction (1968)

Rating: 5/10
The main protagonist looking pure in white.

The setting that is presented in the film shows elements of contrast. The elements of contrast that are discovered are noticed straight away in the introduction. The introduction starts of with a high key lighting and what is seemed to be a wealthy surrounding. The wealthy status is seen by just noticing the high key lighting. This shows that the main protagonist is high and powerful. The high key lighting helps to create a story for the main protagonist, it indicates a superior person that knows what they want.

This is also proven by looking at the props that are used in this first scene. An old styled car is used to show a wealthy background. There is also a driver for the main protagonist to get to places instead of them driving. This can show the audience that the main protagonist is very powerful or just simply lazy.

There is a close up on the car in the introduction instead of the main protagonist, this makes us believe that the character is more about her image of expensive then what people think of her as a person. The car draws our attention as the background building is white and the car is black. Due to the car being the opposite colour, it can show that the main protagonist is leaving the bright side and going into the dark car. It can suggest that the main protagonist was once happy and now has to leave due to something daunting. This is simply shown by using opposite colour to create a contrast in meaning without using speech.

The costume and make up that is used at this point shows that the main protagonist is very classy. This is shown by looking at the black classic car, the personal driver in formal clothing and the main protagonist dressed in white. Due to the main protagonist being dressed in white it prevents an iconic image that the personality is pure and a angel like personality. We get this impression by the posture of the main protagonist being straight and the walk being graceful. Due to the outfit we first see being white and the main protagonist coming out of a white building it helps to makes us believe that this is a good person that seems to not look like they are very innocent.

We then have complete contrast within setting by looking into a different area. The area is seen to be not as looked after and suggest that for the main protagonist that things may be going down hill drastically. While cutting in and out of the main protagonist and a busy town it helps to generate the difference between this character and everyone else in the society. Due to the main protagonist being seen in white and the other women to be seen dressed in bright colours can give the impression that the protagonist has not found her true identity yet and could find it in this busy town. While going backwards and forwards at other women, it shows how women are seen more confident when looking at comparison.

The figure expression that is used in this seen makes the main protagonist look shy and secluded in the open world. However while looking more in-depth at other iconic women in this film it shows their confidence that is also presented in the brightly coloured clothes that they are wearing.

The contrast seen between the wealthy state and the drastic change of not so wealthy.

Hit that film!
