GBH (2012) The editing of the first few scenes

GBH (2012)
Talking about editing in the film GBH

Rating: 5.8/10

While watching the film GBH we hear David Cameron's voice in the first scene. David Cameron is speaking about what great work the police are doing. This is being said while witnessing a riot take place. The way David Cameron's voice has been editing in creates a much more powerful imagery. The powerful imagery that is created from this edit shows how one dominant voice can change the perspective of a scene. David Cameron being the Prime Minister and speaking during this scene makes it much more powerful as his opinion really does matter.

The next scene straight after the introduction shows an interesting aspect to the story all because of the edit. You can see the editing is well thought out when the different angles of the cameras show key moments of a police officer getting ready. Starting from their boots and then working up to the top of the body. By using this it again helps to create dominance. The power that is seen is just by looking at the camera shots. Starting from the bottom of the officer and then working upwards shows how the police is looked up as an inspirational person, someone that is seemed to be in control. However if the camera angles were to look up and then go down to the boots it would then make the police officer look weak.

After the police are seen getting ready they are then fully armored and running towards something. This is indicated by looking at the camera shot, the camera shot is going from left to right and therefore shows that they are running towards something instead of away. This scene would not have the same impact without the editing. In this scene  you can see that there have been many cuts and dramatic music put in to create more suspense. Each time the screen goes black where there has been a cut for a quick second, makes everything seem more serious and daunting. Without editing being used in this scene alone there would be no suspense and the officers when running would not look like they were running so fast. The dramatic music in this scene helped to show the viewers that the police really need to get somewhere. There is then slow cutting motion that is seen just before the officers get to the door. This creates a lot of suspense as it is making us in the audience really want to see what will happen. This scene alone really gives the impression that we are on an emotional roller-coaster by just understanding what the editor has done.

when the main protagonist leaves the flat, there is loud noises that were heard inside and have now followed the main protagonist outside. The edit has shown how the police officer is thinking about what is happening at that current moment. The magical moment of editing it that a story can be created even when there is no speech. This is shown again straight after after this scene when clapping is heard in the changing room before we know where it is coming from. This gives a brief confusion of why there is clapping happening right that moment. When looking at the face of the main protagonist in the changing room he looks distressed, lost and misunderstood. This therefore gives a sense that these feelings do not deserve a clap. In a result to this when editing the clap in before we see it makes the audience more engaged to identify what the reason is for such an enthusiastic clap.

Then realising the clap is suggested as a non thankful clap, we then see flash backs. When cutting backwards and forwards in the flash backs we learn what the main protagonist's character is like. By using this so early on, we then get a full picture of what the personality is like for the main protagonist. The main protagonist is seen as an undercover gang member that helps to keep his friends out of trouble, The main protagonist from just this simple cut by the editor has shown the true identity. This also shows how much we didn't know about the character before this scene. Another cut that helps us to get to the main protagonist even better is when he is caught in bed with another women by his girlfriend. The music that has been edited in at this point has made the film seem more mysterious and unsettling. We don't know as an audience why the main protagonist is acting this way and the music helps to create a mystery also about the film.

In conclusion to this, when looking at the film GBH it helps to show that editing plays an important role in the whole making of the film. From hearing sound, seeing cuts and watching blackouts it helps to show the audience how something little can be changed and then made into something untold yet.

Hit that film!
