Film Response - Alfie (1966)

Rating: 7/10

Alfie played by: Michael Caine

Directed by: Lewis Gilbert

I really enjoyed watching this film as it had a very unique and refreshing feel to it. At first I was unsure on whether or not I would enjoy this film, due to the main protagonist speaking directly to the camera at times. However this film is something that has become a hidden enjoyment to watch. The films shows how the swinging 60's was full of hidden secrets that were happening without people's knowledge. The way women are treated in this film gives the indication that the 60's women were not treated well. Alfie, the main protagonist shows how men ruled and women did whatever they could to make the man happy. During this period of time, it was hard to show anything to revealing. This film shows abortions and sly homosexual references. The film shows how when the men will play, they will not always get it their way in the end. For Alfie, the only thing that mattered was his sex life and this is shown with his strong dominance of a character and the way women are betrayed. Women are dressed provocative or fully clothed, this shows that women are either being seen as sex objects on not worth the intention. Due to Alfie fourth walling often, it helps to shows that the main protagonist has acknowledge us and this therefore makes the audience feel much more engaged. Although Alfie's character is very dominant against women, we long to see the cheeky side of Alfie and then makes his character seem likable instead of hating what it is he does.

All is fun and games, until someone plays you at your own game. Michael Caine plays this role perfectly and due to his human nature in real life, we cannot help but like him.

This film is highly recommended, here is the trailer:
